Osama Bin Laden: His Death, Al Qaeda & the Islamist Jihad

Learn how Bin Laden died and what this means for America! Retired Lieutenant Colonel Joe Ruffini answers your questions.

There is no single, definitive profile or anatomy of a post-bin Laden, Islamist terrorist, nor will there be in the immediate years to come.

Modern day jihadists emerge from poor families and rich ones. Some are illiterate while others possess advanced degrees from respected academic institutions. Terrorists are foreigners, and they are naturalized or legalized citizens. Terrrorists hail from countless ethnicities, races and cultures from every corner of the Earth.

Terrorist Motivations

Contrary to popular belief, jihadists are not solely motivated by religious zeal.

It is true that many, like the late Osama bin Laden, fight in the name of Allah, truly believing that their God, through his words in the Qur’an, commands them to “Muslimize” the world and re-instate the Islamic caliphate; however, others become Islamists because they want to be part of a band of brothers, travel, experience military training and feel the exhilaration of armed combat in a far off land such as Chechnya, Iraq or Afghanistan.

There are also those who join the terror ranks to effect the transition from a life of poverty and hopelessness to one of respectable employment that pays a good salary and benefits. Still others, like many of the Taliban today, fight not so much for Islam but for the large sums of cash that flow from the seemingly unstoppable Afghan drug trade.

Diversity Among Terrorists

Some terrorists are recruited. Others willingly enlist. Others are coerced, their livelihoods or families threatened unless they do as instructed. Most are men, but a growing number are women. The rank and file jihadists work diligently to maintain low, clandestine or covert profiles. Others, often at the top of the terror food chain and under a guise of legitimacy, remain in the public forefront. They are well-known and respected members of their communities and are active in local affairs, academia and politics.

Islamist terrorists are Sunni Muslims, Shia Muslims and Muslims from lesser known sects. Some are strict followers of Islam who pray 5 times each day, attend mosque regularly, do not smoke or drink alcohol or have sexual relations outside of wedlock. Others are not so strict and openly lead more liberal lifestyles.

As you can see, though Islamist jihadists possess diverse ethnicities, family histories, socio-economic backgrounds, education, religious and political beliefs, there are many attributes common between them.

The Origins Of Terrorist Leaders

As with many legitimate, high-profile organizations, the founders and senior executives of terror organizations such as al Qaeda often come from upper middle class or wealthy families, are well-educated and were drawn to radical Islam at a fairly early age.

Osama bin Laden, for example, was born to a father who accumulated billions of dollars in wealth from lucrative construction contracts granted to his companies by the Saudi royals. As a young teenager, bin Laden was a strict and devout Muslim who would often preach to his fellow students in school.

Bin Laden’s second-in-command and al Qeada’s probable next leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, came from a well-to-do Egyptian family. He became an Islamist at the age of 14. Al-Zawahiri is a graduate of Cairo University, a medical doctor and a surgeon.

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks, joined the original Islamist organization – the Muslim Brotherhood – when he was just 16 years old.

One of the more infamous 9/11 attackers, Muhammad Atta, held dual college degrees: an architectural degree from Cairo University and a degree in urban planning from the Technical University of Hamburg in Germany.

If they had made different choices in life, these men might have done much to help build the Middle East instead of bringing destruction to the world.

Twenty-first century Islamist terrorists who fight in the name of Allah become radicalized at some point in their lives by a combination of influences.

Often, the duty to fight and die for Islam is instilled at a very young age via sermons in the mosque, instruction in school and personal guidance from respected family members.

Childhood Lessons

One formerly ruthless, Islamist terrorist and now a convert to Christianity, Kamal Saleem, reveals in his book The Blood of Lambs that from the age of 4 his mother repeatedly lectured that his greatest duty was to kill infidels – especially Christians and Jews – and some day die as a martyr for Allah.

Jihadist Organizations

Many Islamists are cemented into a life of violent extremism through their exposure to and association with jihadist organizations such as the Muslim Brotherhood. Once involved with the Brotherhood, they are encouraged to read and embrace the revered writings and teachings of that organization’s long-deceased icons, such as those of founder, Hasan al-Banna and leading religious authority Sayyid Qutb.

Al-Banna founded the Muslim Brotherhood in 1928 in Egypt. Before being assassinated in 1949, he wrote a book titled Jihad, which motivates Muslims towards extremism to this day. Sayyid Qutb, member executed in 1966 for his part in attempting to overthrow the Egyptian government, authored Milestones, a writing that encourages applying physical force to achieve Islamic revolution. Qutb’s Milestones serves as the quintessential, ideological foundation for today’s modern, jihadist movement.

Terrorism As A Response To Atrocities & Oppression

Sometimes current events and their associated, social injustices inspire Muslims to violent jihad. The plight of the Palestinian people, the U.S.-led, Western world’s occupation of Muslim lands, the collaboration between leaders of oil needy, Western nations and corrupt Arab monarchies and the perceived control of the Israeli State over the United States often motivate young followers of Islam to join the ranks of al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Taliban and other lesser-known groups.

With respect to the terror rank and file, a violent, life-changing experience can motivate them to seek revenge, as mandated by time-honored tribal and family codes of honor. A Palestinian whose brother was killed in Gaza by an Israeli, an Iraqi boy who saw his father beaten and arrested by coalition soldiers or an Afghan man who lost his wife and children when an errant U.S. missile destroyed his home – these incidents and many more like them occur within the world’s war zones each day, and greatly play into the hands of terror propagandists and recruiters.

The Results Of Terrorist Indoctrination

Terrorists can be extremely intelligent and adept in the planning and execution of their attacks. Such was the case when Mohammed Odeh supervised the construction of the 2 massive bombs that killed hundreds when al Qaeda operatives attacked the U.S. embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Nairobi, Kenya in 1998.

Terrorists can also prove to be dim-witted and inept. A textbook example is that of British-born citizen Richard Reid, aka Abdul Raheem or Tariq Raja, the “shoe bomber” who attempted but failed to ignite explosives concealed in his footwear during a trans-Atlantic commercial flight in December 2001.

Either way, those who choose to listen to the terrorist doctrine of violence and bloodshed are a threat to the lives of innocents everywhere.

When will this 21st century reign of terror finally end? No one has an answer. There are, however, some positive contributors that may eventually align to bring about a slow but sure jihadist flame-out.

Democracy In The Middle East

First, the unexpected mass movements in Middle East and North Africa demanding more democratic government and individual freedoms may deal a serious blow to organizations such as al Qaeda. Osama bin Laden preached for many years to his fellow Arabs that the only way to bring about change and rid Middle East of selfish monarchs and despot dictators was through violent means.

The predominantly non-violent, 2011 mass demonstrations throughout the Arab region (Libya being the exception) may have proven to Arab Street that with respect to al Qaeda and similar jihadist groups promoting violent overthrow, their time has passed.

During the winter and spring of 2011, many thousands of citizens in Tunisia, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain refused to resort to violence during their protests, despite the often brutal tactics employed by those countries’ security forces against the demonstrators.

The paramount example of change that can be achieved by peaceful protest was presented to the Arab world by the Egyptians. Egypt is the largest Arab nation state. The ousting of their President and long-time heavy-handed ruler Hosni Mubarak, after just weeks of unrelenting yet peaceful civil disobedience and demonstration, lent credence to a growing view in the Arab world that the preaching of violence to achieve governmental change, as espoused by the Osama bin Ladens of the world, is passé.

The demise of Osama bin Laden, coupled with continued, peaceful and successful Arab demands for freedom, could prove to be the 2 decisive blows that slowly but certainly render al Qaeda weak and increasingly irrelevant in the months and years to come.

What We Can Do To Aid Middle Eastern Democracy

Freedom-loving nations must affect an end to the preaching of anti-Western, anti-Christian and anti-Judeo hatred permeating all-too-many textbooks, sermons, family discussions, radio and TV shows throughout Arab, Persian and Muslim worlds. In order to stop the terror, one must terminate the cause that sparks and fuels the terror. Kill the cause and the terror will fade away.

The free world must continue to provide economic development, secular education and job opportunities for those trapped in poverty and despair in underprivileged Arab and Muslim lands. Secular education brings with it exposure to other views and opinions, debate, new cultures, disagreement and reflection – all of which can lead to a greater understanding, acceptance and tolerance of different peoples, their religious beliefs and lifestyles.

Following a secular education, opportunities for well-paying careers and advancement must be afforded to many more Muslims internationally. Careers generate respectable income and individual pride. Financial security and opportunity for advancement among a greater number of Muslims will enable them to stabilize, marry, retain a job, maintain a residence and provide for a family.

Western powers must cease aligning themselves with corrupt Arab and Muslim regimes that suppress their own citizens and squander their nations’ wealth. Much easier said than done. The relationship between the United States government and the Saudi Arabian royal family is a textbook example of the oil-based, pimp-prostitute relationships that only fuel anti-American sentiments. America’s support of corrupt and unjust regimes stimulate the propaganda machines of al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Taliban and contribute positively to terror recruiters’ efforts.

There is a growing intolerance among Muslims for terror attacks, carnage and killing of innocents. Hopefully this disapproval will continue to grow and erode local indigenous support for Islamists throughout the world.

The Need For A Smart Application Of Force

Terrorists must continue to be captured and killed. This will not stop the terror. When one jihadist dies in battle another quickly takes his place. But until it all ends, one less terrorist on the streets is one less innocent falling victim to murder in the name of Islam.

America must defend itself at all costs but without occupying Muslim lands and engaging in prolonged wars. The United States has been playing into al Qaeda’s propagandist hands for almost 2 decades. Osama bin Laden told his followers in the early 1990s that if American troops were allowed to occupy Muslim lands, they would never depart. That has been proven true since Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm were conducted 2 decades ago. American troops remain in Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Afghanistan.

Unfortunately and while initially well-intentioned, the United States has missed the mark and significantly botched both the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Neither of these wars possess definable, achievable objectives. The Iraqis are simply playing along and biding their time until U.S. and coalition forces finally depart. Then the bloodbath will commence as Sunni and Shia Muslims battle each other for wealth and power and as Iran supports Iraqi Shias with arms, intelligence, supplies and the political clout of an impending nuclear power.

With respect to Afghanistan, the military objective for which we initially invaded – to retaliate against al Qaeda for the 9/11 attacks and to rid Afghanistan of al Qaeda – was achieved a long time ago. Let’s stop playing into the hands of the Islamist propaganda machines by indefinitely occupying Muslim lands. Let’s bring our valiant man and women of back home and give them the rest they so desperately need and so richly deserve.

The United States must adopt a ruthless but non-occupational approach to eradicating terror threats in foreign lands. On May 1, 2011 President Barack Obama did just that when he ordered American elite Special Forces to violate the sovereign airspace and border of Pakistan, find and eliminate Osama bin Laden and return home.

All America presidents must keep the world on notice.

Any nation that willingly or unwillingly permits terrorists to reside, train, plan or conduct operations to the detriment of the United States, and that refuses to eradicate the threat itself, will be visited by U.S. military forces.

The U.S. military will drop in unannounced, brutally eliminate the threat and then return home immediately. People will be killed. Things will be broken. The U.S. will not pick up the cleaning bill.

The U.S. reserves the right to ruthlessly defend itself, anytime, anyplace. But it will no longer occupy foreign soil, nation-build, pay for damages incurred in the act of defending itself abroad nor notify other nations of an impending, special forces visit.

The Struggle For Peace Must Go On

The post-bin Laden Islamist jihadist will continue to be resilient, innovative, asymmetric and willing to die for Allah and Islam. Unburdened by massive bureaucracies, nation state fiscal obligations, complicated procedures and long approval processes, the jihadist will continue to successfully and rapidly develop and adapt his tactics, techniques and procedures and weaponry to meet and beat those of his adversaries.

The ongoing, Islamist jihad is not likely to come to an abrupt end. The free world must continue to endeavor to get it right, with its best hope being that the Islamist jihad will wither away on the radical vine before the mid-21st Century.

Peoples of the free world must remain ever-vigilant. Let us all never forget that in this war against Islamist jihadists, one person can save the lives of a great many by taking to heart the spot-on guidance of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security:

If you see something, say something.”

The Sheep, The Wolves, & The Sheep Dogs

Lieutenant Colonel Dave Grossman, internationally-known presenter, author, colleague and friend, offers an excellent analogy in his books and lectures that is well-worth sharing here. The Sheep Grossman maintains that the vast majority of people – let’s say 95% of the population – are similar in nature to sheep. They are gentle, harmless creatures. The sheep [...]
